Bar Council Verification: Why It Matters When Hiring an Advocate
An advocate's Bar Council enrolment is the single strongest signal that you're dealing with a legitimate practitioner. Here's why we verify it before listing anyone.
In India, you can call yourself a 'legal consultant' or 'legal expert' without any particular qualification. To call yourself an advocate and represent a client in court, however, you must be enrolled with a State Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961.
That enrolment carries weight. The Bar Council verifies your law degree, conducts (or recognises) the All India Bar Examination, and holds you to the rules of professional conduct. If an advocate misbehaves, the Bar Council can suspend or strike them off the rolls ? a real deterrent that doesn't exist for unregistered 'consultants'.
Every advocate listed on KanunSetu has been verified by our admin team against their stated Bar Council registration number. Until that check passes, the profile stays unverified and isn't returned by the public search. The verification badge on a profile means we have seen and checked the documents.
When you're hiring an advocate (on or off our platform), you can independently verify the registration number by searching the relevant State Bar Council's roll. It takes 30 seconds and gives you peace of mind that you're dealing with a real practitioner.
